What is the thickness throughout the glove or foot cover?
There are different thicknesses for the different products. All thicknesses can be found in the catalog. In Myo-Electric gloves, the silicone in the fingertips is triple fabric reinforced for added durability, which consequently makes the fingertips slightly thicker than the palm side. In individual fingers, the silicone is thinner in order to offer a better transitional and proportionate look to the remaining finger(s).
The passive hand is a bit heavy, can it be made lighter?
Foam densities (firmness and durability) determine the weight of the inner hand. The Passive Hands are made standard with firm foam because it has been determined that they are more durable, especially with a connector. As a Semi-Custom Made (SCM) option, a medium foam can be chosen, but product durability and longevity will be diminished.
What is the preferred method for thinning or feathering the proximal end of the glove, foot cover or individual finger?
Regal products are already feathered at the proximal end. It is also possible to further grind the finger margin thinner for an improved esthetic look; however, the reinforcement fabric under the thin silicone layer will be exposed which may affect the durability of the glove or foot cover.
How do we select an Off-The-Shelf (OTS) hand style?
Step-by-step instructions using the PSOG (Product Structure & Ordering Guide) (pages 1B and 92B)
Steps 1 to 4 — CHOOSE:
1) Anatomy
2) Anatomical Form
3) Model
4) Side
Step 5 — Take MEASUREMENTS:
Use the OTS Patient Intake Form & Measurement Charts to document your patient’s measurements. (Consult the “OTS & SCM FORMS REFERENCE GUIDE” on page 75 to locate the form/chart that applies to your patient’s anatomy. Please request or make additional copies of these forms/charts to document your patient’s measurements).
Step 6 — Select STYLE or SIZE:
• Compare the patient’s measurements to those in the Measurement Chart
• Refer to the page numbers listed below Styles and Sizes to view the full size photos
• Select a Style or Size that is most similar to the patient’s sound limb in both measurements and physical appearance: – Select a STYLE for a Glove, Finger, Passive or Partial Hand – Select a SIZE for an Inner Hand Shell, Arm Sleeve or Partial Foot Cover
Step 7 — Select Between OTS or SCM:
a) Choose OTS
» When the selected Style or Size does not require any modifications
b)* Choose SCM
» When a custom shaped filling is needed for a Partial Hand, Partial Finger(s) or Partial Foot
» When dual coloring is necessary to match the patient’s dual skin tone
» When a specific finger bend is required because the residual finger is too long to accommodate a hinged finger
» Other types of special/custom requests may be available and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please inquire with OrtoPed
Steps 8 to 13 — OPTIONS for OTS and SCM:
8) X Series (with or without hair option)
9) Finger Construction
10) Zipper
11) Distal Connector & Thread (for 120C/120CL only)
12) Foot Plate thickness (for HDSF-ER only)
13) Single color
Steps 14 to 16 — OPTIONS for SCM only:
14) Dual coloring
15) Finger bends
16) Custom shaped fillings
What is the significance of the number engraved on the Regal product?
On the exterior proximal end of more recent models, the Regal model number, side, gender and size is engraved as part of the product because the information is preset in the mold.
On the interior of the glove and also preset in the mold is the Regal serial number that is used for identification, tracking and warranty purposes. For finger prostheses, the serial number can be found on both the instruction booklets and the packaging box.
Which models fit Otto Bock’s Myo-Electric hands?
All Models 100/100L gloves will function with an Otto-Bock Myo-Electric hand when using the Regal Model PVCIH Inner Hand Shell as an interface. Please refer to the Cross Reference Chart on page 15.
On occasion, when fitting a patient with a long glove, there is some wrinkling that occurs at the glove’s elbow because it doesn’t match where the natural elbow joint would be. What are your suggestions for fixing this?
The most cost effective solution is to purchase a separate Regal long sleeve, correctly position the elbow on the patient, cut the Regal glove at the wrist and rejoin it with the new sleeve. Alternatively, a Semi-Custom Made (SCM) order for the long glove’s elbow can be placed.
There are very few contraindications to wearing the Regal Anatomical Form, as most of them are temporary and can be treated or alleviated:
• Extremely sensitive scar tissue or bony prominences
• Certain dermatological or circulatory medical conditions
• Open wounds
Which adhesives are recommended for gluing other objects onto a silicone glove or foot cover?
The answer to this depends on what you are gluing and for what purpose.
For nail painting: Apply Hollister Medical Adhesive on the silicone nails, let dry, then do the nail polish. (Note: It is recommended to clean the nail polish every night with acetone-free remover, as the nail polish might get absorbed inside the silicone nails and stain them if it stays on for a long time).
For gluing acrylic nails onto gloves: Use Hollister Medical Adhesive. Spray the glue on both the nail and underneath the acrylic nail. Let it dry before pressing the acrylic nails onto the glove’s nail surface. Do not use chlorosyl silicone — it might stick onto the glove’s nail permanently.
For gluing onto socket: Use epoxy glue. (Note: This glue will damage the silicone material; it is advisable not to separate the silicone once it is glued onto the socket). As an alternative, use clear silicone caulking which will bond very nicely, but can also peel off easily.
Is it possible to remove the Inner Foam Hand from a glove?
Yes. There are two reasons for wanting to remove the Inner Foam Hand from a glove:
1) To replace a worn-out, used or torn glove
2) To repair or replace an Inner Foam Hand
To remove a Inner Foam Hand from a glove:
Because the inner foam hand (passive hand) is not permanently adhered to the inside of the glove, it can be removed at anytime by following the steps below:
1) Use a detergent or a water-based cream that does not contain any petroleum or alcohol products. Apply this to the outer surface of the glove (only the area from knuckles to glove end). Leave the section from knuckles to finger end as clean and dry as possible so that this surface is non-slippery when doing the flip over action below.
2) Fold the glove inside out from the glove end, then use one hand to hold the fingers (detergent and cream free area) and the other hand to roll up the glove until it meets the foam.
3) It will be difficult to keep up as the wrist area is the bottleneck and the palm area is the widest. Keep rolling up with one hand holding the fingers and the other hand doing the roll-up action (kind of push and roll-up). If this process is difficult, this could be due to insufficient lubrication in the widest area, therefore add more detergent or water-based cream then keep rolling up until it passes the widest area.
4) It is advisable to roll the glove up to where the knuckles are (i.e. it is NOT advisable to roll up to finger end as this might tear the fingers’ web). To take out the finger foam area, simply use a plastic stir stick and carefully insert it into each finger to loosen the foam from the glove. Then use one hand to hold the exposed wrist area/foam end and the other hand to push the glove off the foam.
To insert a Inner Foam Hand into a glove:
1) Apply lubrication onto the surface of the glove except for knuckles to fingers end.
2) Roll the glove up to the knuckles area and put the foam hand into each finger.
3) Roll down the glove to the wrist area where it meets the foam hand end.
4) Use one hand to push the foam inside while using the other hand to hold the fingers to make sure the foam (finger area) reaches the finger’s end.
5) Roll down the glove.
Semi-Custom Made Anatomical Forms have an Off-The-Shelf appearance selected from the OTS Styles or Sizes, to which a custom-made interior filling is shaped to fit the patient’s residual limb securely and comfortably.
When should you Choose SCM (Semi-Custom Made):
o A custom shaped filling is required for a Partial hand, Partial Finger(s) or Partial Foot
o Dual coloring is necessary to match the patient’s dual skin tone
o A specific finger bend is required because the residual finger is too long to accommodate a hinged finger
What options are available only for SCM?
o Dual coloring
o Finger bends
o Custom shaped fillings
